Our father, Phil Gargan, served his community humbly for decades as a soccer coach, organizer. His journey began in the street in front of our home in Shark River Hills, New Jersey with the neighborhood children, my brother and myself. Our dad never played the game, but he became a student of the game, studying and devouring anything he could get his hands on. He would teach my brother and I all of the basic skills: how to trap, kick and dribble the ball, and most importantly how to practice and reach for our goals.
From these humble beginning, he went on to coach at every level of youth soccer, from recreation and travel ball to becoming president of the Neptune Soccer Association, where he and a band of dedicated volunteers developed Neptune Soccer into an internationally recognized organization. The Summer Kick Off tournament, Phil and his group launched on the dusty field behind Neptune High School is now in its 47th year of operation.
Phil also organized the first exchange tour of an American team to travel, the Neptune Rowdies and stay with Orangefield Boys school in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The Phil Gargan Foundation is focused on improving the lives of children in New Jersey and around the country with that same vision of community service through soccer as Phil lived. Our focus is to nurture positive values and principles through the practice of developing individual skills to contributing to a team, to helping others. To providing a safe, uplifting environment to practice, play soccer, grow, open opportunities and enjoy and share life. Through our programs both on and off the field, our mission is to continue our father’s incredible legacy in the sport and make our community a better place for the next generation of soccer fans.
Phil Gargan first met Trevor Adair as a player on the exchange team from Belfast Northern Ireland, and he invited him to come live with the Gargan family.
Adair would eventually go on to have a stellar career at Lock Haven State (now Lock Haven University), to help lead them to a Division III and Division II national title as a player. After graduating, Adair became an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina before taking over at Brown University then Clemson University. He was the 1998 ACC Coach of the Year and led Clemson to the Final Four in 2005, finishing with 208-115-31 record across his two head coaching jobs. Adair also served as an assistant coach with two U.S. Youth National Teams. Along the way encouraging and empowering so many others to follow their dreams through the sport and life, service to others, and to encourage others as they were inspired.
The goal of the Trevor Adair Scholarship is to give someone else the same chance Trevor got with our family to change their life. Through soccer and a good education, we are hoping to help talented students and soccer player improve their life and be able to make a difference in their community like Trevor and my father.
